Chrysler Blast From the Past on Display This Weekend

Most of the Chrysler stories done on this site stress the future. They talk about the growth the company has seen post-bailout. They talk about the new and upcoming cars, such as the Dodge Dart, and all the new features on current models. The future is what everyone in the car industry cares about, what’s around the next bend. The nice thing about this surprising chunk of news is how much of a step back in time it is.

The New York Times has an article about this upcoming weekend’s Greenwich Concours d’Elegance. Show goers have something extra to look forward to this weekend in the form of a 1973 Chrysler Imperial Limousine. It is a fantastic find and is being presented in its current state, meaning that it still has an ashtray full of cigarette butts and peeling paint. The showing of old limo will be the first time its seen public display since 1986.

Auto enthusiast Howard Kroplick discovered this car lover’s treasure. He says that he first saw the old car on the estate of William K Vanderbilt II in Centerport, NY. Mr Kroplick is a research volunteer at the estate which was converted to the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum in 1950. While putting together an exhibition about the Vanderbilt Cup races, he found it in a cottage with the bumpers removed to get the behemoth (20 foot long) inside. He asked around to figure out what was going to happen with this classic, and the museum was pretty clueless, pointing out that it would probably just be auctioned off. During a private auction last year, Mr Kroplick was the winner when he bid $275,000.

Mr Kroplick is still undecided on exactly what to do with his new purchase, whether to keep it as is in all its aging glory or to set about restoring it to a former glory. For the time being, it’s staying as is for the show this weekend. If you happen to be looking for something to do this weekend, the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance is running Saturday and Sunday, 10am to 5pm. Tickets are $30 a day or $45 for both days. Children under the age of 12 get themselves free admission as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

Definitely an exciting look back at the long road Chrysler has had up till now. How Chrysler Turned Failure Into Success

Chrysler has most definitely been enjoying a rebirth. Just a few years ago, the company was considered a zombie with people just waiting for a death keel. That never happened, though, with the government stepping in to provide a controversial bailout aimed to put the auto maker back on the track. It seems to have worked with Chrysler enjoying the best sales they’ve seen in years. Soon, they will be putting out a new car in the form of the 2013 Dodge Dart and it’s already got heads turning and people talking about it with love. It’s clear that Chrysler is ready to be the dominant brand in the auto industry.

The Detroit Free Press has an article talking about the company coming back from the brink. In it, they note that just three short years ago, Chrysler is still maintaining in the resurgence of the Asian car-makers recovering from the devastating tsunami. Ford and General Motors can’t say the same thing.

The article looks to examine the reasons why Chrysler isn’t experiencing the drop in the market that the other makers are. They point out several reasons why Chrysler is succeeding. The first reason why is because Chrysler isn’t simply relying on releasing an endless wave of new cars, but on making sure that the ones that are out are of the highest quality possible. This allows the cars to retain their value more and drives up their trade-in values. The article quotes ALG as saying that the company is predicting the values for Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram will be higher than they were in 2007.

“The market seems to be responding positively to their products,” says Larry Dominque, the executive vice president of ALG.

Another point is that Chrysler is looking to get people with low credit into their cars. 1 of 5 Dodge buyers in April were financed with an interest rate of at least 10 percent, while Chevrolet was just 1 in 10. Chrysler has stated that the reason for this is because of the market being more willing to provide more flexible terms.

Chrysler is a company that is proving it believes the best way to capture the market, and buyers, is not just assaulting them with flashy new cars every year, but taking their current fleet and making sure that it’s the best quality possible. They did something that no one else has done, and looked not just at a hand full of their vehicles for renovation, but all of them. It seems to be really paying off. Their sales up to this point of the year have been nothing short of stellar. The Jeep brand and Dodge brand are enjoying a new found success in their all ready popular models. It’s become quite clear that Chrysler is back on top, not by chance, but by good business sense.

Author Claims Chrysler Minivan Defined Generation

Americans love their minivans. Families, soccer moms, car pool dads, there is practically a whole sub-culture revolving around the minivan, and according to a new book, the mini-van helped “define the lifestyle of a generation.”

Pulitzer-prize winner Paul Ingrassia’s new book “Engines of Change” highlights fifteen influential vehicles in American history, and amongst the Ford Motel T and the Chevrolet Corvette is the Chrysler minivan. It might seem like a less sexy choice, and auto enthusiasts rarely drool over a minivan. Still, Ingrassia points out that there were 210,000 minivans sold in the first full year of production, and their popularity would “signal a shift in America’s love affair with the automobile from sleek cars to tall and burly trucks.” Ingrassia also argues that the minivan both represented and even encouraged a lifestyle shift from “painting the town” to “painting the nursery.”

We couldn’t agree more with the Chrysler minivan’s inclusion in Ingrassia’s book, and we hope that the success of “Engines of Change” will bring attention to this sometimes under-appreciated vehicle.
