Chrysler Celebrates 10th Anniversary of “8 Mile”

Much has been said about the incredible job the marketing team with Chrysler has been doing. “Half-Time in America” was a hit with fans when it aired during the Superbowl. Before that, “Imported from Detroit” featuring Eminem in it was capturing the attention of buyers and critics alike. Chrysler wants to keep that momentum going, and to do so will be releasing a new special edition vehicle in honor of the 10th anniversary of Eminem’s popular movie, 8 Mile.

According to NBC news, Chrysler will be putting out a special edition of the Chrysler 200 sedan. That’s not all, however, as the company has another release planned. To tie-in with the new Broadway show, Motown: The Musical, there will be a Chrysler 300 based around the show. The tie-in campaigns that these vehicles are part of stem from comments Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne made that emphasized the auto-maker’s roots in Detroit. Olivier Francois, Chrysler’s global marketing chief, went even further by saying, “We needed to give Detroit credit for what it really does stand for”

No word yet on to what degree Eminem himself will be involved with the promotion of the sedan. Chrysler is currently getting ready to show off even more of their premium vehicles during the SEMA show, scheduled to happen over the Halloween week. Keep your eyes and ears peeled to the future to see what develops out of that auto-show.

Are Electric Cars in Chrysler’s Future?

Gas prices are back on the rise and so the conversation has shifted once again to what needs to be done to get off the dependency we have on oil. The Toledo Blade is reporting that Chrysler believes that an answer may just lead in electric cars.

“We believe in electrification, sparingly and for the right kinds of targeted applications,” said Bob Lee, vice president and head of engine and electrified propulsion engineering. “We’re developing technology for commercialization, preparing for the shift when consumers start pulling them into the marketplace.”

Chrysler has been trailing behind its competitors with the production of electric and hybrid vehicles. Sergio Marchionne, the chief executive officer of Chrysler and Fiat, sees this as a new opportunity for the company. Chrysler already has some plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles in the form of Town & Country minivans, but they are only available in California, Arizona, North Carolina, and Michigan. Ram pickups are looking at the possibility of making a plug-in hybrid of their pickups.

The future of the auto industry is unwritten in terms of what will be fueling the next generation. It’s good to see, however, that many are starting to try to figure out ways of getting drivers out of oil and adapting new and cleaner technologies.

Chrysler & United Way Teaming Up Against Child Hunger

Chrysler and Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne wants to help end child hunger. He’s asking for some help in this endeavor, looking to his employees to join with him.

The Detroit Free Press writes that Marchionne is the campaign chairman of the United Way for Southeastern Michigan. One of the biggest concerns that United Way is dealing with that they informed Marchionne is that of child hunger. The fight against child hunger has brought together United Way with the State of Michigan and national nonprofit, Share Our Strength, to create a program called Michigan No Kid Hungry initiative. What this program will do is bring more children to school and summer meal programs.

The decision to help with charity comes after the much talked about bailout after the companies bankruptcy. Now that the sales have finally turned around and Chrysler is making money again, Marchionne thinks it’s about time that the company starts giving back and one way of doing that is getting involved in the community.

“It’s time for us to help generate a turning point within our community for people in need,” Marchionne said in a letter to his employees. “I would like to ask you to direct your incredible resolve toward strengthening the spirit of volunteerism, which is an integral part of the fabric of this community.”
