Chrysler Faces Criticism Over New 2014 Jeep Cherokee Design

2014jeepcherokee-2The biggest news in the auto world of late is the early release of the new look of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee. Jalopnik provided the initial leak. What many fans saw was unexpected; a vast departure from the norm. A wave of negative criticism followed and many lashed out instantly at what they viewed as a step too far in the wrong direction. It was different and too different for comfort.

Jalopnik covered the breakdown of how Chrysler handled the affair. It appears that they were getting pretty prepared for the lash-back against the new design. On the Chrysler Communications’ Facebook page was a message to not judge a book by its cover. It urged people to remember that what makes a Jeep isn’t on the outside  but what’s inside that matters most. Even though I agree, it’s hard not to see that as some cheesy line straight from a kids film.

The negative feedback was prevalent and got negative. “Ugly” was the word used the most to describe how the audience was feeling. Chrysler went to Twitter to repeat the message, urging all to give the new look a chance.

Even Ralph Gilles, the main-man over at SRT, was on Twitter responding to the critics. He cited the new design as a paradigm shift. A quick look shows how right he is about that.

Jalopnik concludes with a defense of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee. While not the biggest fans of some aspects, mainly the headlights, they make note of how the vitals are still there in the iconic seven-bar grille. There’s something to be said for something revolutionary different rather than keeping with the safe and predictable. In the least, it’ll get people talking and make people who wouldn’t have otherwise notice.

It’s amazing how much has been said of just a few choice shots of the new exterior. Not one mention of any details beyond that and it’s still caused an avalanche of excitement and vitriol. While Chrysler might not be too happy hearing from the nastiest of critics, it does prove the point of there being no such thing as bad press. It’s the talk of the auto world and the specs haven’t even been revealed yet.

New Chrysler Mini-Van Will Feature 9 Speed Transmission

ext1The future is upon us and Chrysler is gearing up to meet it head on.  The current course is that they will be released a new minivan in the time frame of 2015.  One of the features expected to be included in the design is a new part of the powertrain.  That would be a nine-speed automatic transmission.

The reasoning behind this is that car-makers are following the trend that consumers want more for less.  The more in this case is driving, the less being less gas to make that happen.  Another part of this decision is that regulations are becoming stricter.

So Chrysler is getting ready to deal with these new changes.  Back in 2011, Sergio Marchionne, the CEO of Chrysler, paid a visit to the Windsor Assembly Plant, where the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country are made.  While he was there, he remarked that the nine-speed transmission will be in the next generation van.  Recently, he even said that the same gearbox will be added to the Dodge Dart to make it more appealing to consumers.

Chrysler is making strong strides into predicting what the car of the future is going to be.  The smart gamble will always be on the one that costs the customer less at the pump.

Chrysler’s ‘Farmer’ Ad is a Hit!

UntitledChrysler scored another win this year at the Superbowl with their Jeep ad. With the voice of Oprah underscoring Jeep’s appreciate for our men and women in arms fighting for us over there, it won over the same crowd that loved the previous ads with Clint Eastwood and Eminem. It seems like they wanted to really go all out since that wasn’t the only Chrysler ad that played during the big game. While it’s the one everyone is talking about the most, the Ram ‘Farmer’ ad is still one hot on everyone’s lips.

The question that many people were asking the days following the commercial were where did the idea come from? Greg Mitchell of The Nation found another video on YouTube that is similar to the Ram Ad. It was uploaded in June of 2011 and features the same speech from Paul Harvey. The biggest difference is that Ram went out and got their own footage and images of farming for their commercial.

So, is it a cut-and-dry scandal of ripping off a YouTube video? Appears that it’s not really the case. A message on the page for the video says “Farms.com is pleased to be working with Ram Trucks and support the ‘Farmer’ Super Bowl commercial.” Plus when you watch their video, there is also a link to the Ram version.

Seems like Chrysler just saw an ad they enjoyed and wanted to expand it to put it on a national stage. There doesn’t appear to be anything scandalous going on, especially when the group responsible for the original ad highlights their cooperation.
