Chrysler Supports Detroit By Sponsoring the Detroit Jazz Festival

Detroit Jazz FestivalChrysler has always been proud of their Detroit lineage.  The ‘Imported from Detroit’ campaign was created to celebrate that history.  The auto company is clear in their support of the great auto-city.  That’s why they are sponsoring the Detroit Jazz Festival, the world’s largest free jazz festival.

This is the second year in a row that Chrysler will be the presenting sponsor for the Festival.  They will be bringing their Detroit-inspired cars as well.  The 2013 Chrysler 300 Motown Edition, the 2013.5 Chrysler 200 S Special Edition, and the 2013 Chrysler 300 John Varvatos Limited Edition.

This will be the second year in a row that Chrysler has been the sponsor for the Festival.  It’s all in step with the “Imported from Detroit” campaign.  The Jazz Festival is a huge money-maker for the city.  Thousands come in to attend from all across.  25.8 percent of the audience comes in from out of state.

“Not only is the Detroit Jazz Festival a world-class arts and education contributor, it’s an economic booster for the city and one of the many beautiful stories that continues to be ’Imported from Detroit,’ said Saad Chehab, President and CEO of Chrysler Brand.  “The Detroit Jazz Festival spreads the message about the beauty of Detroit and provides an enriching cultural experience for jazz and music lovers across the country. The people and the commitment behind these events is what continue to inspire the Chrysler brand’s ‘Imported from Detroit’ campaign.”

The festival is glad to have Chrysler back.  “Support from companies like the Chrysler brand, who are committed to helping this city,” said Gretchen Valade, chair of the Foundation Board of Directors, Detroit Jazz Festival.  “Assist the Detroit Jazz Festival in continuing to stay the largest free jazz festival in the world and helps us to continue to offer these unique cultural experiences.”

The line-up hasn’t been released yet and looks to be sometime later this month.   The Festival is known for bringing in big name talent, such as Sonny Rollins and Wynton Marsalis, who were there last year.

Chrysler 300 Motown Edition Aims to Bring Motown Fans into Dealerships

Cars are one of the most frequently advertised objects in entertainment.  Got a new racing game coming out?  How about a movie with a spectacular chase sequence?  Want the main character of a new TV show to look cool behind the wheel of a beautiful car?  All fairly wide-known reasons for a licensed vehicle to appear in various forms of media.  What is rare is using a car to help promote a new musical.

Staying true to the message of ‘imported from Detroit,’ Chrysler has helped bring Motown: The Musical to Broadway.  The show has opened to some dazzling reviews.  Variety says “This jubilant jukebox musical comes loaded with great singers, tons of energy, and dozens of classic Motown roof-raisers.”

2013 Chrysler 300 MotownChrysler also had a “Motown Edition” of the Chrysler 300 in honor of the musical.  It’s a fantastic fusion.  A classy sedan that does a great job calling back to music that defined the Motor City.  Both sell the image of being imported from Detroit, the popular slogan that Chrysler lives by.

The Wall Street Journal asks if this will be effect marketing.  They worry that while the older generation will appreciate a musical, and in turn a vehicle, that remembers the oldies, but what about new car buyers?  What about the generation raised on Grunge and New Wave?

There’s really no easy answer to that one.  One of the biggest trends at the moment is nostalgia.  It wouldn’t surprise me to see a good portion of possible buyers be interested in products that celebrate that era.  The industry will have to wait and see if this experiment pays off for Chrysler.

Chrysler and Batman Make for the Ultimate Team-Up

The Imported from Detroit commercial series is one that we’ve followed very closely here. We’re also very big fans of the advertising that they have put out. The Clint Eastwood commercial during the Super Bowl was the star of the night. Personally, I’m also a huge fan of the Christopher Nolan Batman films. The Dark Knight was easily one of my favorite movies in a long time. Chrysler must’ve decided to branch out to include all my joy into one thing as they have found a way to put both the Batman and Imported from Detroit together.

Imported from Gotham City introduces a new onslaught of building up hype for the new Dark Knight Rises movie coming out this summer. Part of the advertising will include a contest in which contestants try to create an original TV spot including both the Dark Knight and the Chrysler Brand with the help of an assortment of assets that includes Chrysler 300 car footage and Batman footage from the official trailer. The winner will be chosen by the man himself, Christopher Nolan on July 20th which will then appear on television. The winner will also be given an all-expenses paid trip to Hollywood to finish the spot with a professional editor. Afterward, they’ll be flown out to NYC for the red carpet treatment at a premiere screening of The Dark Knight Rises on July 16th.

Chrysler will also be airing their own ad for the team-up. The new commercial will feature the 300 sedan and will be aired starting June 19th. “The 2012 Chrysler 300 featured in this marketing and advertising campaign was created intentionally to look as if it could be driven on the streets and fit in to the nightlife of Gotham City; it’s clearly a vehicle that stands out and makes one take notice,” said Saad Chehab, Chrysler Brand CEO.
